Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Clint Eastwood directs himself in this film inspired by a true story, which is modest and old-fashioned in a good way. He stars as Earl Stone, a horticulturist in his late 80s who accepts a high-paying job that requires him to drive across country. Soon, however, Earl discovers that he is transporting cocaine for a drug cartel. Earl is the sort of person who uses words and expressions that aren't politically correct, but Eastwood ensures that he is a likeable, amiable character. Happily, the film is equally charming, especially when Earl is singing along to old songs while driving his truck. Yes, a couple of scenes are unnecessary (do we really need to see Earl enjoying two separate threesomes?), but for the most part The Mule is funny, well-paced and poignant. For Eastwood's generations of fans, it's a must-see.
